Vanjangi (also spelled Vanjangi Sunrise Point), near Paderu in the Eastern Ghats, has become one of the most magical day trips from Visakhapatnam. On the right morning you stand above a sea of clouds as the sun rises over the hills — a view that feels closer to the Himalayas than the Andhra coast.
Where is Vanjangi and how far is it?
- Distance from Vizag: ~100 km (via the Araku road, then towards Paderu)
- Riding time: 3–3.5 hours to the base
- Final stretch: a short, steep trek (~20–30 min) from the parking area to the viewpoint
When to go
The cloud-sea is a cool-season phenomenon. Aim for November to February, and ideally the day after rain when moisture sits in the valleys. You need to be at the viewpoint before sunrise, so most riders either start from Vizag around 2–3 AM or stay overnight near Paderu and ride up in the early morning.
How to plan the ride
Because of the pre-dawn timing, Vanjangi works best as either a very early start or a two-day trip combined with Araku. Carry warm layers — the hilltop is cold before sunrise — plus a torch for the short trek, water, and a fully fuelled tank since stations are scarce in the hills.
Best bike for Vanjangi
The roads are hilly with some rough patches near the top. A geared bike like a Royal Enfield, Pulsar or Apache is ideal. Ride carefully in the dark and on damp, misty surfaces.
What to expect at the top
On a good morning, the valley fills with cloud and the rising sun lights it gold — you're literally looking down on the weather. On a clear or dry morning you'll still get sweeping ghat views, just without the cloud-sea. Nature doesn't guarantee it, which is exactly what makes catching it so special.
